A lively and revealing biography of Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, celebrating the powerful real-life friendship behind one of America´s most iconic television programs. Andy Griffith and Don Knotts met on Broadway in the 1950s. When Andy went to Hollywood to film a TV pilot about a small-town sheriff, Don called to ask if the sheriff could use a deputy. The comedic synergy between Sheriff Andy Taylor and Deputy Barney Fife ignited The Andy Griffith Show, elevating a folksy sitcom into a timeless study of human friendship, as potent off the screen as on. Andy and Don - fellow Southerners born into poverty and raised among scofflaws, bullies, and drunks - captured the hearts of Americans across the country as they rocked lazily on the front porch, meditating about the simple pleasure of a bottle of pop. But behind this sleepy, small-town charm, de Visé´s exclusive reporting reveals explosions of violent temper, bouts of crippling neurosis, and all-too-human struggles with the temptations of fame. Andy and Don chronicles unspoken rivalries, passionate affairs, unrequited loves, and friendships lost and regained. Although Andy and Don ended their Mayberry partnership in 1965, they remained best friends for the next half century, with Andy visiting Don at his deathbed. Written by Don Knotts´ brother-in-law and featuring extensive unpublished interviews with those closest to both men, Andy and Don is the definitive literary work on the legacy of The Andy Griffith Show and a provocative and an entertaining listen about two of America´s most enduring stars. 1. Don Quixote is widely considered to be the first modern novel. As a classic of Western literature, it is regarded by scholars worldwide to be one of the finest works of fiction ever written, and a magnificent product of the Spanish Golden Age of literature. Cervantes’ influence on the Spanish language has been so great that his work is often called ´´la lengua de Cervantes.” The work was written in two separate volumes, both of which are contained in this production. It introduces the character of Don Quixote de la Mancha, a hero who carries his enthusiasm and self-deception to unintentional and comic ends. He is paired with a comic character of opposite qualities, Sancho Panza, a peasant who is a compound of grossness and simplicity. Volume Two is generally conceded to be the funniest part of the novel. Don Quixote himself represents the faded glory of Spain’s medieval past in all its grandeur…and its superstitious nonsense. Sancho Panza, on the other hand, represents the common sense of the Spanish peasant whose view of reality may be hilariously comical in its ignorance, yet reflects the stern conditions of practical life. The average peasant has little use for the legends of medieval knights. The tension between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza sustains the comedy and provides the basis for the highly sophisticated philosophical discussions between the two, and between them and the other characters who wander in and out of the tales. Don Quixote of La Mancha is a masterpiece worthy of serious contemplation, and of being eagerly and repeatedly enjoyed. This version of Don Quixote was translated by John Ormsby. 1. Including conversations with God.To listen to The Little World of Don Camillo is to travel to the valley of the River Po, Italy´s widest and most fertile plain, with its unique atmosphere, culture, and natural history. It is to do so in the incomparable company of a cast of fictional characters who testify to the exquisite humor and humanity of their creator. In the Little World, eternal forces grapple with the absurd drama of everyday life, and hilarious and unearthly things can happen. If you keep this in mind, you will have no difficulty in getting to know the hotheaded village priest, Don Camillo, and the equally pugnacious Communist mayor, Peppone. Nor will you be surprised when a third person watches the goings-on from a big cross in the village church, and not infrequently intercedes.... In story after story, Don Camillo and Peppone confront each other, sometimes in a serious and violent manner. But when the priest unburdens himself in the village church, a voice from above the high altar responds, and Don Camillo’s conversations with God begin. Shrewd, insightful, compassionate, and gently humorous, the good Lord leads the stubborn priest to discover the inner man beneath the politics and prejudice so that eventually, and to the great benefit of the local community, he and Peppone can, however begrudgingly, develop respect for one another. It is then we see the ideas and values of Don Camillo´s little world are true for all times, the world over.... In this new, authorized edition of Giovanni Guareschi´s enchanting classic, 19 stories never before translated into English are published for the first time. The Little World of Don Camillo has been enjoyed by millions of folk from 10 to 100, not only as a book, but on film, TV, and radio, and now as an audiobook. 1. Language: English. Quixotic is a word that the dictionary defines as ´´extravagantly chivalrous or romantic; visionary....´´ and that is a fitting definition, indeed, for this charming retelling of Don Quixote, the 17th-century Spanish classic by Miguel de Cervantes, now updated for the modern listener. The gallant and fragile Quixote will touch listeners, as will his faithful squire Sancho Panza and the tragically beautiful heroine of the gentle Don’s chivalries, the fair Dulcinea. Don Quixote is rightfully noted to ´´....move to pity rather than ridicule, and to tears as well as laughter. And herein lies its chief claim to greatness - that it seems to have been written not for one country nor for one age alone, but to give delight to all humankind.´´ 1. Language: English. Literature´s famous gentleman, Don Quixote of La Mancha, his trusty squire Sancho Panza, and their adventures and mishaps, are told in this centuries-old classic, which features challenges with windmill monsters, castles masquerading as inns, as well as innkeepers, prostitutes, goat herders, soldiers, priests, escaped convicts, and scorned lovers. Don Quixote must do battle with all of these for the sake of chivalry and knighthood - at least, that is what he believes. Volume one of Cervantes´ celebrated 1605 Spanish novel is translated here by Arvid Paulson and Clayton Edwards, as originally published in 1922 by The Hampton Publishing Company in New York. 1.
